Paige Burrell – University of North Carolina (Diving)

Major:  Undecided

Final list of colleges:  UNC, Auburn, University of Houston, Mizzou (University of Missouri), West Virginia

Reasons for choosing UNC:  “I picked the University of North Carolina because that was my dream school since I was in eighth grade. When I went to visit, I fit right in, and I felt like I could really excel there.”

What was the progression that led you to diving at the collegiate level?  “When I was younger, I used to do gymnastics, and I always wanted to go to Florida to compete in gymnastics. When my love for gymnastics died, I went into diving, and I really can’t see myself doing anything other than diving in college.”

Favorite high school sports memory:  “My favorite memory happened last year when I was a junior and my teammate Meghan Wenzel was a sophomore, and we both tied at states for first, and it was really incredible.”

North Penn diving coach Kyle Goldbacher says:  “We are very near the end of an era here. Paige is the last of my original Imaginary divers, and she has officially shattered the illusion of being within the limits of what’s possible. In three short years, she has made the extraordinary seem very ordinary. She continues to redefine the impossible, and so those that love her have been gifted a chance to believe in the unbelievable.
“Although Paige is a two-time state champion and a three-time All-American, she has really only scratched the surface of what she is capable of achieving. Paige was nationally recruited, not because of her achievements, but because of her potential. Her physical prowess and biomechanical assets are a coach’s dream, but what those folk down in North Carolina have yet to discover is that she’s got the heart of a champion ingrained in her spirit. Paige has grown that champion within herself through many trials and many heartbreaks and many confrontations with fear. What I am most proud of is that she has learned how to identify and take control of her responsibilities without losing sight of her dreams. We’ve talked about this a lot…to really zero in on creating a lifestyle of healthy mind and body and spirit that enables you to harvest the blessings of your labor. To recognize the lesson in every moment and to remain vigilant in terms of preparation and objective, so that you position yourself to maximize each opportunity. Eventually, you will realize for yourself that you have achieved greatness and have exceeded excellence.
“There is no doubt in my mind – Paige will one day be an NCAA 1-meter national champion. For now, I will enjoy every hour and every day and every dive I get to share with (her) – and then (she) can go and handle (her) business.”
