Cynthia Sheehy – Wagner College (Soccer)

Major: Physician’s Assistant program

Final list of colleges:  Wagner, East Carolina, Old Dominion

Reasons for choosing Wagner:  “I chose Wagner because it was right outside New York City, so I can have a lot of connections afterwards. The academics were very intimate, so I could have a personal one-on-one with my teachers. The coaching staff and the players were very welcoming.”

Coach Mike Rio says:  “I had the pleasure of coaching Tia her first year when she was on jayvee and obviously last year with the varsity girls. Just her growth, development and determination over the years has been phenomenal. The growth that the team has made in the four years she’s been part of the program - from not making the playoffs her first year to this making it all the way into the state tournament – is a testament to the senior class and especially Tia. She works hard, she’s composed and just generally willing to do whatever we needed her to do on the field. She would go into the forward role, the midfield role, outside wing role - whatever she needed to do to help the team, she was up for it.

“Personally, it’s also special to me because obviously being a student-athlete is important as well, and I had the pleasure of teaching Tia in the classroom. So I know the determination she brings out on the soccer field she also brings to the classroom, and she will be extremely successful at Wagner both on the field and in the classroom. Tia is just always extremely composed. She’s always the person we would have take PKs for us because we know that she steps up there, and she’s calm, cool and collected and just ready to bury the shot. It’s just been amazing to watch her grow throughout the last four years as a young lady and as a player. I’m super proud of seeing the person (she’s) become.”
