It was a story – according to Quakertown coach Peach Draper – that wrote itself.
Sunny Draper scored an insurance goal midway through the fourth quarter of Thursday’s win, a goal that vaulted the Boston College-bound senior over the 200-point mark for her stellar career.
“She didn’t know that it could happen today,” the Panthers’ coach said. “This was a big game, and we didn’t want to have any distractions.
“It was a gorgeous night, perfect sunset, a great home crowd. It was unbelievable – a fairy tale ending.”
Making the accomplishment even more remarkable was the fact that the senior captain was sidelined her entire junior season with an injury and put up 200 points in just three years.
“It just felt so good because going through an injury like that, going through not just the pain and the rehab and the hours of physical therapy – it’s the mental part too,” coach Draper said. “Will I get back and will I be as good as I was and all of that, and to see her have that success and to see her do it with her teammates, it was just incredible to be her coach and to be her mom. I was just trying to take it all in.”
Draper entered her final high school season needing 71 points – she now has 72. Thursday’s goal was the 29th of the season for Draper, who also has 14 assists, accomplishing all of this in just 11 games.
Draper’s milestone was the icing on the cake of a win that upped the Panthers’ record to a perfect 11-0, and this win was hard-earned.
The visiting Falcons took a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the second quarter when Regan Rodriguez turned an Abby Iacona pass into a goal.
Ten minutes later, Penny Longacre scored the equalizer, using a Draper assist. The two teams took that 1-1 tie into halftime.
Early in the third quarter, Zoe Smith turned a Penny Longacre pass into the go-ahead goal, and if the Panthers needed insurance, Draper gave it to them when she scored her 29th goal of a brilliant senior season with an assist from fellow captain Cassidy Landis. It was a goal that put Draper’s name in the program record books.
“It was a perfect sky and a night destined to be something special,” coach Draper said. “I am so thankful for every player who played their heart out tonight. This team showed resilience, composure, trust, and an incredible belief in one another. Every single player contributed to making this night what it was. This game will always hold a special place in my heart. Nights like this remind me why we play, why we compete, and why being part of this team means so much.
“Proud to be part of the Quakertown Community School District. Proud of these girls. And proud to continue watching them uphold our Standard.”

Quakertown coach Peach Draper:
–The game: “We knew this was going to be a hard-fought battle. Pennsbury is an incredibly skilled and well-coached team, entering the game with a 9-1 record. They threw the first punch in the second quarter with a breakaway and a well-executed passing sequence to take the lead. But our team wasn’t rattled. If anything, we wanted to fight back even more. With 3:16 remaining before halftime, Sunny Draper delivered a fantastic pass to Penny Longacre in the circle. Penny worked through two defenders and punched it into the cage to tie the game at 1–1. Heading into halftime, our team was energized. We made a few adjustments based on what we had seen, and we were ready to keep battling.
“Then, 13:44 into the third quarter, Penny Longacre sent a rocket of a pass through the circle, and our senior wing, Zoe Smith, was right where she needed to be to put it away. I am so proud of Zoe for being in such a great position to receive that pass, a skill she has been working on all season. Her preparation showed when her team needed her most. Up 2–1, we could feel the excitement building. We talked about how pressure is a privilege. To be on our home turf, competing against a skilled and well-coached team, was just so exciting.
“Our success was built on total teamwork from top to bottom. Paige Longacre and Cadence Jozefowski were fantastic in the field, setting the tempo with sharp, precise passing that kept our offense moving, while Ella Metz, Mya Pallone, Taylor Wehr, and Karly Formica all stepped up in huge ways to contribute to our win. Emily Reese, Cameron Landis, and Blair Mora held our defensive line incredibly strong, while Cassidy Landis was the chief operating officer at defensive midfield, keeping everyone organized and in the right positions while executing play after player with her sister Cameron Landis.
“Then came the fourth quarter.
“Cassidy Landis sent a rocket ball into the circle, and Sunny Draper dove for it and executed the most incredible tip to find the back of the cage. The moment was even sweeter because it marked Sunny’s 200th career point. It was an incredible milestone, and what an unforgettable way to reach it. And behind it all was Darcy Baxter, who was exceptional in goal and made big saves to keep Pennsbury’s shots out of our cage.”

Hello October! The Falcons kicked off the new month with a long road trip to Quakertown to face the undefeated Panthers. The JV team set the tone with an exciting win, pushing the strong momentum into motion ahead of the 7:00 varsity game. Under the stadium lights, with a slight humid haze in the air, the starting whistle sounded and the battle began. Quakertown was looking to protect their undefeated record and Pennsbury was focused on forcing then blue and white to put a mark in their loss column.
The first quarter was back-and-forth with strong fight across the board. Each team had one penalty corner and PHS led two shots to their one.
“I love how strong we came out of the gate,” head coach Traci Curtis said. “We had confidence, poise, and stuck to our game style. We created a few scoring opportunities that were impressive and our defense was working really well together to stifle the opponent and get momentum out of the backfield.”
The score was 0-0 after the first 15 minutes.
At the 14-minute mark of the second quarter, PHS senior defender Cailyn Reilly barreled through and gained possession of the ball in the Falcons’ defensive circle. She swept it up field where senior midfielder Ava Pinto got a piece of the pass and tipped it ahead. It bounced over a defender’s stick and reached senior forward Abby Iacona on the move. Iacona worked her magic up the right, dodging a defender at full speed and took a shot from just inside the circle. The goalie saved it, but Iacona picked up her own rebound to regain possession and dumped it back to the center where Regan Rodriguez was waiting to pounce. Rodriguez connected on a one-time shot, putting the Falcons up 1-0.
“We definitely caught them off guard and had them on their heels a bit from the start,” said Curtis. “Our speed, strength, and connection were allowing us to control the game, and our ability to start a play from our defensive circle and finish with a goal is just beautiful hockey. Iacona left a trail of smoke on that carry, and it was an incredible rebound off the goalie’s clear to keep the ball in the circle. Rodriguez got where she needed to be and the pass was perfect.”
The next ten minutes of the quarter were just continuous fight from end to end with a lot of great hockey in the middle. At the three-minute mark, the Panthers earned a penalty corner that despite being broken up, led to a tying goal from the baseline. There were only three minutes left in the quarter, but it was filled with plenty of excitement.
Two Pennsbury players received green cards, forcing them out for two minutes. The Panthers earned a penalty corner with the time expired, but the Falcons’ defense stood strong and denied any go-ahead goal. It was 1-1 going into halftime and PHS would be two players down for a little less than a minute at the start of the third quarter. The heat had been turned up and there was another half yet to play.
Soon after the third quarter started, the Pennsbury penalties expired and they were back to full strength, but Quakertown snuck one past PHS goalie Amelia Fernandes at 13:44 when the ball was fed from outside the circle and Zoe Smith tipped it in. The blue and white were up 2-1.
There was no more scoring in the third, and the Falcon defense was relentlessly stifling the Panthers multiple times throughout. At one point, Quakertown had three penalty corners in a row and was unable to connect on any of them. A Panther player was carded at the end of the quarter giving the Falcons the player up advantage going into the fourth. It was an exciting one-goal game, jam packed with action, intensity, and high level hockey.
Exactly halfway through the final quarter, Quakertown’s Sunny Draper connected on a diving tip fed from outside the circle to put her team up 3-1.
“It was an incredible touch that redirected past our goalie into the corner of the cage,” said Curtis. “It was hit from far outside the circle so a tough one to track, and the tip was simply precise. Our keeper was playing an outstanding game and that was just one of those goals that is difficult to see coming and react to successfully.”
The Falcons continued to battle throughout with opportunities in their offensive end, but the Panthers’ defense was strong and denied the comeback. The blue and white remain undefeated and handed Pennsbury their first loss in nine games.
“We are extremely proud of how our girls played tonight,” Curtis said. “Scoring first and setting the tone was huge and exciting to watch happen against a really talented team. Quakertown out shot us and also had more penalty corner chances (they had 9 and we had 4). We battled defensively and worked beautifully offensively with speed, skill, and IQ. Everyone played with heart and left everything they had out there and that is all we can expect of ourselves.
“We have so much more hockey to play, and we cannot wait to take the next step together.”
Pennsbury will host Lower Moreland on Monday at Falcon Field.
BENSALEM 5, ABINGTON 0
The Owls rebounded from their tough loss at Central Bucks East two days ago to earn the shutout win over Abington.
Paige Dando put the Owls on the scoreboard in the opening minutes of the first quarter, using a Kylie Blank assist. A Leah Vorgity goal midway through the second quarter sent the Owls into halftime with a 2-0 lead. They added three goals in the second half.
Dando led the Owls with a goal and two assists while Vorgity added a pair of goals, Ava Grayo contributed a goal and an assist, and Blank had two assists.
Scoring Summary
First quarter

Leah Vorgity from Paige Dando (B) 9:36
Veronica Lennon from Ava Grayo (B) 7:15
Fourth quarter
Ava Grayo from Paige Dando (B) 2:37
Bensalem coach Gary Kubik:
–The game: “The Owls started off early when Paige Dando weaved through the circle off of a Kylie Blank assist to put one up and over the Ghosts’ goaltender’s right shoulder just 1:35 into the game. That score held up until sophomore Leah Vorgity got her first of the day, with another Blank assist, with 6:55 remaining in the second. Blanks second assist of the day puts her in the team lead for assists with five. Vorgity scored again with the help of Dando five minutes into the third quarter. That gave Vorgity her seventh goal of the season to lead the team.
“Veronica Lennon, who is usually very busy trying to keep some of the best strikers in the league quiet, scored her first goal of the season on a corner with a perfect insert from senior Ava Grayo with 7:13 remaining in the third.
“In the fourth quarter, Ava Grayo slammed one in on the back post with the help of Dando. It was Grayo’s second of the season to go along with three assists. That last assist made it a day for Dando with a goal and two assists. That gives Dando five goals and four assists through 10 games.
“The offense never let down today, achieving a season high 19 corners. Defensively, the Owls looked good too, keeping the sightlines for keeper Hailey Fricke clear. This shutout gives Fricke five for the year and lowers her goals-against average to 1.20.
“The whole team played well today, and we were able to get some players more playing time today in critical situations. Shoutout to the Abington goalie, who stopped at least 17 shots and was under pressure all game.”
Up next: Bensalem will travel to Conwell-Egan for a non-league game and then will celebrate Senior Night when the Owls host William Tennent in a non-league SOL crossover game on Monday (7pm), and Abington will host Council Rock South in a crossover game next Friday.

–The game: “We played a tightly contested first three quarters with Neshaminy this afternoon and it took our team some time to find our rhythm. The momentum shifted at the end of the third quarter. Katie Guarino was able to touch the ball around the goalkeeper as we played a corner out with no time remaining on the clock.
“PW came out hungry and aggressive in the fourth quarter and Gracie Kerns was able to finish a 1v1 play with the goalkeeper at the 13:58 mark. This marked a special moment for Gracie as the goal was her 100th of her high school career. The team is so proud to have been a part of this impressive accomplishment! Sammy Callan would score off a direct corner shot at 6:21 (Julz Scherzer assist). Bree Molony had a strong day in the cage and Quinn Burns and Julz Scherzer held down the midfield for us to limit Neshaminy’s attacking opportunities in the second half.”

–The game: “We were able to roll our midfield to work with the heat as best we could, still working with our injuries and illnesses. But our team fought back and again we were able to get everyone into the game, which are always a good time and helps know our bench can compete and finish just as much as starters can contribute.
“We had a good jump in the middle of the game with our goals.”
–Props: “Paige Bauman had a great game for her minutes. Truly solid play from her in a couple different positions tonight.
“Riley Flynn had a great game on the side of the field and played strong midfield in the heat.”

Upper Moreland knew they would have to play their best to compete with the strong CB South squad, and they rose to the challenge. This was one of our best overall games, especially with our defensive play below the 25-yard line.
Our defensive back unit was really in sync today. Reese Purcell, Hannah Gardner and Lyla Soleau held CB South to only three shots in the first quarter. Defensive midfielder Bridget Hess was a force in the middle today in one of her best games of the season. Hess made key stops and immediately looked to push the ball forward by making smart, aggressive passes up the field. Her strong defensive play and ability to move the ball quickly helped keep CB South frustrated with our #3.
At halftime, with the score only 1-0, UM came out in the second half and continued to battle despite the heat. Our midfielders – Kourtney Malone, Harper Richmond and Giana Morrison – did an outstanding job covering a lot of ground, pushing the ball up to the attack and then getting back to defend. Olivia Torres controlled the midfield, using her stickwork to weave past CB South players and dictate the pace of play. Olivia is our leader on the field, and today, she helped our team battle against a team with very strong skills.
Goalie Izzy Fisher made six saves in the first half, but CB South increased the pressure in the second half, forcing Fisher to come up big for her team. Fisher responded with an outstanding performance, making 12 saves in the second half to keep the Titans from adding to their lead and keeping the Bears with the hope of keeping the game close. Izzy had great practices this week, and she continues to grow in her first year on varsity.
Our forwards did have opportunities, but the CB South defenders played them very tough. MJ Reilly had the most pushes up the field and never came out of the game, playing hard throughout. Gianna Jones played well at multiple positions.
As the game continued, with the heat and a back-and-forth battle, our bench made a crucial impact. Players were being subbed in and out, and the level of play stayed high. Charlotte Russo came in during the second half and helped the team manage the pressure by quickly getting the ball out of the circle.
Knowing CB South would spend a lot of time in our circle, the team focused on getting the ball out of the circle and to our midfielders. Charlotte Russo did an excellent job staying low and pushing the ball out of danger. Kaelyn Ashley, Molly Gould and Sekai Bell came into the game and provided valuable minutes, allowing starters to get some rest while keeping the team’s energy high.
As a team, we learned today that playing with strong defensive play, teamwork and a willingness to battle for every ball can keep us competitive against any team we play for the rest of the season.

Midfielders Devon Crowley and Cissy Lewis made some great passes in transition from defense to offense and forwards Hailey Barwis and Cara Albano stepped back to the ball well and were productive in the circle.”
Springfield Twp coach Anita Stum
–The game: “We worked to create opportunities by looking for good through balls and using the sides of the field, which helped us earn 4 penalty corners and create chances going forward. Defensively, we worked together, communicated, and did a great job staying with our players. The girls also did a great job reading North Penn’s corners and cutting off passing lanes.
“Even with the score not going our way, we kept our heads in the game and continued working hard until the final whistle. There are plenty of positives to build on, and we’ll take what we learned today into Monday’s matchup against Council Rock South.”

Central Bucks West coach Lori Ierubino:
–The game: “Cumberland Valley came out strong and energized and caught us flat in the first quarter. They controlled the play and were more aggressive than us. But we responded. The rest of the game our team came alive and ready to battle. It was a great game of physical, fast paced field hockey. Cumberland Valley is a good District 3 team and doesn’t know anything but that pace of play. We have seen it twice now with Manheim Twp and tonight’s game vs CV. We have improved as we gain the experience. I am very pleased with how we responded to a slow start and two-goal deficit. The girls rallied together and gained confidence that will come is handy as the season progresses.”
